HYGIENE AND MEDICATION
BY: MULLIGAN'S PLACE LOFT, STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK
BOB PRISCO AND PETER WELLINGTON
Success in racing and breeding pigeons starts with good health and the fancier's willingness to accept that an excellent hygiene and medication program is necessary to keep his birds healthy and competitive, to win the large prizes.
It is advisable for all serious fanciers to attend seminars regularly on the latest medications, treatments and dosages. A fancier should talk with an experienced pigeon veterinarian to keep track of any changes and to receive advice or recommendations about scientifically proven, legitimate pigeon products, those that have demonstrated, through many years of testing, to be effective for pigeons.
Taiwan fanciers must be very careful for the following reasons:
1. Large numbers of imported birds every year;
2. The country's warm climate;
3. Strenuous racing series and the competing birds young ages;
4. Various breeding and racing seasons during the year; and
5. Overcrowded conditions (the reason for most health problems)
BECAUSE OF TAIWAN'S UNIQUE STYLE OF RACING AND ITS CLIMATE, ITS FANCIERS MUST MEDICATE BEFORE AND DURING THE BREEDING AND RACING SEASONS.
The most common pigeon diseases are Coccidiosis, Canker, Paratyphoid, E-Coli, Worms, Aden-virus, Paramyxovirus, Respiratory Infection, Pigeon Malaria, and Pigeon Pox.
Also, just as important are the most common external parasites that pester our birds: Feather Lice, Red Mites, the Pigeon Fly and Mosquitoes. Since parasites like these are external and visual to our eyes, and occur in almost any climate, but especially in warm climates, we must account for them when we plan for good health and hygiene in our lofts.
The feather lice are the least harmful of all the pests that attack our birds, but with Taiwan's early racing season, they can cause damage primarily with the birds' feathers. The feather lice often chew holes into the flights and cause other types of visible damage that can effect the racing pigeons' performance. The adult lice live on the skin and feathers of the birds and only rarely leave the pigeons to lay their eggs around the nest. Their food consists of feathers, scales, and other debris off of the skin. They do not suck blood. However, the lice's constant annoying movement interferes with the pigeons' proper relaxation and rest. Heavily infested birds may become weak and thin.
The common red mite can be a real problem in some lofts. It hides somewhere in the loft during the day and at night comes out from its hiding place to bite and feed on the blood of our birds. Red mites are a big nuisance and do not allow the birds to rest properly, and they can help to spread an assortment of diseases. Unless the mites are promptly eradicated, they will increase to such numbers that pigeons will desert their nests. The birds will become weak and breeding will cease.
The pigeon fly is a big problem in warm climates. It is the most dangerous parasite that can attack our birds. It lives most of its life on our pigeons, leaving only to lay its eggs somewhere in the loft. The Pigeon fly bites our birds often, causes them considerable discomfort and can be the major cause of pigeon malaria.
Mosquitoes can be a big problem in all climates. They readily bite our birds and are the most common carrier of the pigeon pox virus.
We must take all necessary precautions to control external parasites. In the cases of lice, pigeon fly, and mites, quarantine any new birds and dip or dust the birds with pesticides. (Insectrin G.P. Poultry Dust, No-Pest Strips, Insectrin X Liquid Form are excellent in the USA.)
YOUR BIRDS' REST IS AS IMPORTANT AS PROPER TRAINING AND QUALITY FEED FOR THEM TO RACE COMPETITIVELY.
Birds feather conditions are very important. When we give the bath water (lukewarm), we should place BEST BATH SALTS in the water. They help to kill vermin, destroy skin parasites and to enrich the strong soft plumage. A warm bath about 2-3 hours after a race relaxes the birds and relieves stress. The birds enjoy it.
Before we discuss various diseases that effect our birds, let us make sure we are using proper LOFT DISINFECTANTS. The two best available in the USA are CLOROX (REGULAR BLEACH) and NOLVASAN. Both are all purpose disinfectants that we may use on the loft as well as in the drinking water. ONE TEASthingy PER GALLON OF WATER OF CLOROX OR NOLVASAN in the drinking water is very helpful and will not harm the birds. Only use it in plain water. You can use it all year. IMPORTANT: WE DO NOT USE CLOROX OR NOLVASAN IN WATER WHEN WE GIVE MEDICATIONS, VITAMINS OR SUPPLEMENTS.
The pigeon fanciers in the USA are not as fortunate as the fanciers in Europe, where several drug companies specialize in producing medications just for pigeons. The products we use are the BEST products available in the USA at this time.
There may be better products offered in Taiwan for the same diseases. Whatever products you use, make sure they are the best available for that specific problem. Stay away from the hocus pocus magic tonics. They are a waste of money and not effective. Remember, the highest priced drug is not always the best drug to use.
We use only these two vaccines:
1. PMV-1 VACCINE (MAINE BIOLOGICAL LABS)
2. POX VACCINE (MAINE BIOLOGICAL LABS)
We vaccinate all our adult birds once a year before the breeding season for PMV-1 (Warm day above 50 F). We vaccinate all young birds at 30-45 days old for PMV-1 AND POX. We usually do both the same day. After we vaccinate the birds we give them a warm bath to relax.
There are two other vaccines you may want to consider, even though we do not use them:
3. ADENO-PMV VACCINE
4. PARATYPHOID SAL-BAC
CANKER - TRICHOMONIASIS
The drinking water usually transmits it from one bird to another. Parent birds can infect young through feeding. Medication effects fertility of the eggs. You must give it 3 weeks before breeding. You can give it again after the birds lay eggs. There are 20 internal types of canker. We recommend rotation of medication:
1. RONIDAZOLE (RIDZOL SOLUBLE POWDER)
2. DIMETRIDAZOLE (EMTRYL SOLUBLE POWDER)
DOSAGE: RACE TEAM - 1 TEASthingy PER GALLON OF WATER FOR 3-5 DAYS AS A PREVENTIVE. IF THE PROBLEM IS IN ADVANCED STAGES, USE 1 TABLESthingy PER GALLON OF WATER FOR 5 DAYS.
If you use individual tablets of RIDZOL 10 MG OR SPARTRIX 10 MG (CARNIDAZOLE), 1 TABLET FOR 3 DAYS.
COCCIDIOSIS
Highly infectious, a very common disease that infects the intestines of our birds. It is usually present to some degree in all pigeons. Young pigeons that have been subjected to severe stress (racing, lack of feed or water, relocation, overcrowded conditions) are most often infected. Unclean drinking water or contact with moist droppings or dampness most often spreads it. It is very common in wet, damp weather.
1. AMPROLLUM (CORID , AMPROL) SOLUBLE POWDER
2. SULMET LIQUID (SODIUM SULFAMETHAZINE)
3. VETISULID SOLUBLE POWDER (SULFACHLORPYRIDAZINE)
DOSAGE: RACE TEAM / BREEDERS
AMPROLLUM - 1 TEASthingy PER GALLON OF WATER FOR 3-5 DAYS
SULMET - 1 TABLESthingy PER GALLON OF WATER FOR 3 DAYS
VETISULID - 1 TEASthingy PER GALLON OF WATER FOR 7 DAYS
E. COLI (COLLIBACILLOSIS)
This disease is very common in our pigeon lofts. Negative bacteria from infected dust particles, rodent droppings and infected pigeon droppings cause it. It spreads very quickly.
1. BAYTRIL (ENROFLOXACIN) LIQUID
2. DI-TRIM (SULFADIAZINE / TRIMETHOPRIM)
3. AMOXYCILLIN SOLUBLE POWDER
4. VETISULID SOLUBLE POWDER
DOSAGE: RACE TEAM / BREEDERS
BAYTRIL - 1 TEASthingy PER GALLON OF WATER FOR 5 DAYS
DI-TRIM - 30 MG PER BIRD ONCE EVERY DAY 7 DAYS
AMOXYCILLIN - 3000 MG PER GALLON OF WATER FOR 7 DAYS
VETISULID - 1 TEASthingy PER GALLON OF WATER FOR 7 DAYS
*BAYTRIL IS VERY HARD ON THE BIRDS. TRAIN LITTLE WHEN YOU USE IT.
PARATYPHOID - SALMONELLOSIS
Very common, it spreads quickly. Infected pigeons, rodents, infected dust, soles of fanciers' shoes, roaches and contact with wild pigeons bring it into our lofts. It can live in droppings for sometime, and also can pass into the eggs.
1. BAYTRIL
2. DI-TRIM
3. SULMET-AUREOMYCIN SOLUBLE POWDER
4. AMOXYCILLIN
5. SAL-BAC VACCINE
DOSAGE: RACE TEAM / BREEDERS
BAYTRIL, DI-TRIM, AMOXYCILLIN SAME AS ABOVE.
SULMET-AUREOMYCIN- 1 TABLESthingy PER GALLON OF WATER FOR 7 DAYS
PMV - PARAMYXOVIRUS
Viral infection unique to pigeons and extremely contagious; Direct contact or indirect contact through contaminated feed, water, or litter can serve to spread this disease. Currently in USA, VACCINATION IS THE ONLY EFFECTIVE MEANS OF PROTECTION.
PMV-1 VACCINE
It takes about 3-4 weeks for the vaccine to take effect.
PIGEON POX - DIPHTHERIA
A virus that mosquitoes and other biting insects carry causes Pigeon Pox. Small whitish wart like lesions appear on the head, feet, legs, and beak areas. They normally will not hurt the birds, and in time they will dry and fall off. It is best to leave them alone. Birds can race with pox, as long as they are able to eat and drink properly. APPLE-CIDER VINEGAR is excellent to give to the birds when pox appear. Use an eye dropper and give each bird 5-10 drops each day.
M.B.L. POX VACCINE (MAINE BIOLOGICAL LAB)
PIGEON MALARIA - HAEMOPROTEUS
This disease is not true malaria, but that is the most popular name for this infection in pigeons. A protozoan parasite that attacks the red blood cells of our birds causes this disease. The pigeon fly, which acts as the intermediate host, carries it. As many as 1/3 of the tested lofts have shown evidence of malaria. The birds usually show no symptoms of the disease. Only by a microscopic examination of the blood can you be sure of the existence of the disease. The parasite destroys the red cells, and the birds may lose their vitality and become anemic. Mild cases cause some loss of gloss in plumage and reduced performance in racing events. Prevention is the best cure for this disease, and since the pigeon fly is the primary carrier, you must control them and eliminate contact with wild pigeons.
1. ARALEN (CHLOROQUINE PHOSPHATE)
DOSAGE: Tablets dissolve in water / follow instructions.
*DISEASE OCCURS IN WARM CLIMATES
RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS - MYCOPLASMOSIS & ORNITHOSIS
These diseases all fall into the infectious bacterial category. They are very contagious to the rest of the loft and go from bad to worse in a short time. Race performance is poor, and there is unwillingness to fly and heavy panting. Symptoms are easy to notice as the birds are in distress. The most important aspects to control respiratory infections concern adequate ventilation without drafts, keeping dust and ammonia levels low and controlling dampness and overcrowding.
1. AUREOMYCIN CONCENTRATE SOLUBLE POWDER
2. AUREOMYCIN-SULMET SOLUBLE POWDER (1 TABLESthingy)
3. GALLIMYCIN SOLUBLE POWDER
4. TERRAMYCIN-343-SOLUBLE POWDER
5. TYLAN CONCENTRATE SOLUBLE POWDER
DOSAGE: FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE USE 1 TEASthingy PER GALLON OF WATER. PLACE VITAMINS IN THE WATER WHEN YOU USE IT. YOU CAN MIX ANY OF THE ABOVE TOGETHER. YOU SHOULD GIVE THEM FOR 5-7 DAYS.
WORM DISEASES
It is advisable to worm all birds at least twice a year. The best way to determine if a worm problem exists is to check the droppings. The most common worms found in pigeons today are roundworms, hair worms, stomach wall worms, gapeworms, stronglylids and tapeworms.
1. IVOMECTIN SHEEP DRENCH
2. IVOMECTIN CATTLE WORMER
3. TELMINTIC-40 SOLUBLE POWDER
DOSAGE: IVOMECTIN SHEEP DRENCH - 3 CC PER GALLON OF WATER,
REPEAT IN 10 DAYS IF NECESSARY
IVOMECTIN CATTLE WORMER - 3 DROPS DOWN THE THROAT TWICE A YEAR
TELMENTIC - 1 TEASthingy PER GALLON OF WATER FOR 1 DAY,
REPEAT IN 10 DAYS IF NECESSARY.
MULLIGAN'S MIXTURE FOR RACE SEASON: GIVE 1 OR 2 DAYS EARLY IN THE WEEK WITH VITAMINS, PER GALLON OF WATER, AT FULL STRENGTH, DURING EACH WEEK OF RACE SEASON AS A PREVENTATIVE.
1. 1 TABLESthingy RIDZOL
2. 1 TEASthingy AMPROL OR SULMET
3. 1 TEASthingy AUREOMYCIN CONCENTRATE
4. 1 TEASthingy VETISULID
5. 1 TABLESthingy BEST VITAMINS
AFTER 1 OR 2 DAYS OF THE MIXTURE, YOU SHOULD GIVE THE BIRDS 2-3 DAYS OF LIQUID VITAMINS AND LIQUID MINERALS. WHEN THE BIRDS RETURN HOME FROM THE RACE, FOR 24 HOURS, THEY SHOULD HAVE, PER GALLON OF WATER, THE BEST LIQUID VITAMINS, MINERALS AND ELECTROLYTES AVAILABLE, PLENTY OF QUALITY FEED AND A FEW RAW SPANISH PEANUTS. THIS FIRST 24 HOURS IS AN IMPORTANT TIME FOR RECOVERY. THE BIRDS NEED PLENTY OF REST AND QUALITY FEED WITH LIQUID SUPPLEMENTS.
ANOTHER MIXTURE FOR RACE SEASON: MIX IN 1 GALLON OF WATER, GIVE TO THE BIRDS STRAIGHT FOR 24-48 HOURS AT FULL STRENGTH.
1. 1 TABLESthingy RIDZOL
2. 1 TABLESthingy SULMET-AUREOMYCIN
3. 1 TEASthingy TYLAN
4. 1 TEASthingy VETISULID
5. 1 TABLESthingy BEST VITAMINS
WHEN YOU USE THE ABOVE MIXTURES, YOU SHOULD GIVE THE BIRDS ALL THE FEED THEY WANT, ALONG WITH RAW SPANISH PEANUTS.
We prefer liquid supplements because we know that all the birds will consume sufficient water each day and will receive the same dosage.
YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS A PREVENTATIVE TREATMENT, AND IT IS NECESSARY DUE TO THE STYLE OF RACING. IF YOU USE THIS MIXTURE FOR 5-10 WEEKS, ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK, IT SHOULD NOT CAUSE ANY LONG TERM INTERNAL WEAR ON THE BIRDS' BODY ORGANS. IT SHOULD BENEFIT THE BIRDS BECAUSE ALL OF THE MEDICATIONS ARE BROAD SPECTRUM ANTIBIOTICS THAT WILL ALLOW YOU TO CONTROL ANY HEALTH PROBLEMS THAT THE BIRDS MAY ACQUIRE FROM YOUR COMPETITORS OR FROM STRESS DURING THE RACE SERIES.
